Radiative Transfer Effects in He I Emission Lines

چکیده
We consider the effect of optical depth of the 2 S level on the nebular recombination spectrum of He I for a spherically symmetric nebula with no systematic velocity gradients. These calculations, using many improvements in atomic data, can be used in place of the earlier calculations of Robbins. We give representative Case B line fluxes for UV, optical, and IR emission lines over a range of physical conditions: T = 5000 − 20000 K, ne = 1 − 10 8 cm−3 , and τ3889 = 0 − 100. A FORTRAN program for calculating emissivities for all lines arising from quantum levels with n ≤ 10 is also available from the authors. We present a special set of fitting formulae for the physical conditions relevant to low metallicity extragalactic H II regions: T = 12, 000 − 20, 000 K, ne = 1 − 300 cm−3 , and τ3889 < 2.0). For this range of physical conditions, the Case B line fluxes of the bright optical lines 4471 Å, 5876 Å, and 6678 Å, are changed less than 1%, in agreement with previous studies. However, the 7065 Å corrections are much smaller than those calculated by Izotov & Thuan based on the earlier calculations by Robbins. This means that the 7065 Å line is a better density diagnostic than previously thought. Two corrections to the fitting functions calculated in our previous work are also given. A study on Ca II 854.2 nm emission in a sunspot umbra using a thin cloud model
In the present work, we introduce and explain a method of solution of the radiative transfer equation based on a thin cloud model. The efficiency of this method to retrieve dynamical chromospheric parameters from Stokes I profiles of Ca II 854.2 nm line showing spectral emission is investigated. The analyzed data were recorded with the Crisp Imaging Spectro-Polarimeter (CRISP) at Swedish 1-m So...
متن کاملRadiative heat transfer: many-body effects
Heat transfer by electromagnetic radiation is one of the common methods of energy transfer between objects. Using the fluctuation-dissipation theorem, we have studied the effect of particle arrangement in the transmission of radiative heat in many-body systems. In order to show the effect of the structure morphology on the collective properties, the radiative heat transfer is studied and the re...
متن کاملRecombination Lines and Free-Free Continua Formed in Asymptotic Ionized Winds: Analytic solution for the radiative transfer
Key words radiative transfer – stars: emission line, Be – stars: winds, outflows – stars: Wolf-Rayet – circumstellar matter In dense hot star winds, the infrared and radio continua are dominated by free-free opacity and recombination emission line spectra. In the case of a spherically symmetric outflow that is isothermal and expanding at constant radial speed, the radiative transfer for the con...
متن کاملEffect of motions in prominences on the helium resonance lines in the extreme ultraviolet
Context. Extreme ultraviolet resonance lines of neutral and ionised helium observed in prominences are difficult to interpret as the prominence plasma is optically thick at these wavelengths. If mass motions are taking place, as is the case in active and eruptive prominences, the diagnostic is even more complex. Aims. We aim at studying the effect of radial motions on the spectrum emitted by mo...
متن کاملIonizing Photon Emission Rates from O- and Early B-Type Stars and Clusters
We present new computations of the ionizing spectral energy distributions (SEDs), and Lyman continuum (Lyc) and He I continuum photon emission rates, for hot O-type and early B-type stars. We consider solar metallicity stars, with effective temperatures ranging from 25,000 to 55,000 K, and surface gravities (cm s) log g ranging from 3 to 4, covering the full range of spectral types and luminosi...
متن کاملBlue compact galaxies and the primordial 4 Helium abundance
Blue compact galaxies (BCG) are ideal objects in which to derive the primordial He abundance because they are chemically young and have not had a significant stellar He contribution. We discuss a self-consistent method which makes use of all the brightest He I emission lines in the optical range and solves consistently for the electron density of the He II zone. We pay particular attention to e...
